Craig Barrett - Born and raised in Taranaki, Craig lived in Hamilton competing in athletics. He represented New Zealand internationally in the 50km road walk for 15 years competing at every World Championship, Commonwealth and Olympic Games from 1994 to 2006.
His best placings were 7th at the World Championships, 18th at the Olympic Games and winning a silver medal at the 2002 Manchester Commonwealth Games.
Craig however is best remembered for his dramatic collapse when in sight of the gold medal at the Kuala Lumpur Commonwealth Games in 1998 and his body would not co-operate with a determined mind.
Winning and losing - The title sums up the reality of setting yourself a goal and consistently working towards it over a long period of time. The structure of the talk will be how he tried to take the experiences and lessons learnt in race walking and transfer them into family and architecture life today. Giving his background, how he got involved in walking, family support he received and how the discipline of walking gave him confidence in himself. He will back up points with light-hearted stories. |
